Turkey hires Edelman for Obama visit

WASHINGTON: The government of Turkey hired Edelman for media relations and influencer outreach during President Barack Obama’s visit to the country, according to the US Department of Justice Web site. Work on the $117,000 account began April 4.

Portland Development Commission issues strategic messaging RFP

PORTLAND, OR: The Portland Development Commission, the city’s urban renewal agency, has issued a RFP for strategic communications and branding for sustainable economy initiatives. The total contract is for one year and worth $80,000. Proposals are due by May 1. More information can be found online.

Lee named TSA assistant administrator, strategic communications office

WASHINGTON: The Transportation Security Administration named Kristin Lee assistant administrator of the office of strategic communications and public affairs, effective April 13. Lee, the former majority communications director for the US House of Representatives Rules Committee, is responsible for external and internal communications initiatives.

Obama nominates McHale, Crowley for State Department public affairs posts

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has nominated Judith McHale for the position of under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs and Philip Crowley for assistant secretary of state for public affairs, both at the US State Department. McHale is the former president and CEO of Discovery Communications. Crowley is senior fellow and director of homeland security at the Center for American Progress. He previously served as the senior director of public affairs for the National Security Council and as the principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.

MS&L awarded GSA certification

WASHINGTON: The US General Services Administration (GSA) awarded certification to MS&L Worldwide on April 14 for advertising and integrated marketing solutions, according to a federal filing. The GSA is a federal agency that oversees government contracts.

US trade representative appoints Guthrie, Mesloh to public and media affairs posts

WASHINGTON: Ron Kirk, US trade representative, named Carol Guthrie assistant US trade representative for public and media affairs on March 23. Kirk also appointed Deborah Mesloh deputy assistant US trade representative for public and media affairs on March 2. Guthrie, former communications director for the US Senate Finance Committee, reports to Kirk and Julianna Smoot, Kirk’s chief of staff. Mesloh, previously the communications director for the Presidential Inauguration Committee and the Obama for America campaign, reports to Guthrie.

Blog Council taps Dell’s Pearson

CHICAGO: The Blog Council, a professional group for executives focusing on social media, tapped Bob Pearson, the VP of communities and conversations at Dell, as president, effective April 6. In his new role, Pearson, whose last day at Dell was March 20, will work alongside Blog Council CEO Andy Sernovitz and will help members implement social media, with a focus on ROI, ethics, creating management policies, and utilizing tools and software.

Defense Threat Reduction Agency to hire public affairs services

FORT BELVOIR, VA: The Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a Department of Defense agency, a sources sought notice for public affairs services, according to a federal database. Services would include the development of informational materials, strategic communication, public outreach, and media briefings. Interested contractors are expected to file a capabilities statement by April 17.

National Nuclear Security Administration taps LaVera as director of public affairs

WASHINGTON: The National Nuclear Security Administration named Damien LaVera as its director of public affairs, effective March 25. LaVera is the former deputy communications director for the Democratic National Committee.
