ICSI hires Carmichael Lynch Spong for project work

BLOOMINGTON, MN: The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) hired Carmichael Lynch Spong for project work, starting in March. The firm is providing media relations and PR counsel for ICSI’s Diamond program, which aims to improve healthcare for people with depression.

Humana hires Rajamannar as chief marketing and innovation officer

LOUISVILLE, KY: Humana named Raja Rajamannar as SVP and chief marketing and innovation officer, effective April 27. Rajamannar, former EVP and CMO for Citigroup’s global cards division, will report to Mike McCallister, president and CEO of the Louisville, KY-based health benefits company. He is responsible for marketing, corporate communications, and government relations at Humana.

Turkey hires Edelman for Obama visit

WASHINGTON: The government of Turkey hired Edelman for media relations and influencer outreach during President Barack Obama’s visit to the country, according to the US Department of Justice Web site. Work on the $117,000 account began April 4.

AFSME hires Policano as public affairs director

WASHINGTON: American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the employee and healthcare workers union, named Chris Policano as its public affairs director, effective April 13. Policano is the former communications director for Source Communications in New York. He is reporting to Lee Saunders, assistant to the AFSCME president.

Lee named TSA assistant administrator, strategic communications office

WASHINGTON: The Transportation Security Administration named Kristin Lee assistant administrator of the office of strategic communications and public affairs, effective April 13. Lee, the former majority communications director for the US House of Representatives Rules Committee, is responsible for external and internal communications initiatives.

Obama nominates McHale, Crowley for State Department public affairs posts

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama has nominated Judith McHale for the position of under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs and Philip Crowley for assistant secretary of state for public affairs, both at the US State Department. McHale is the former president and CEO of Discovery Communications. Crowley is senior fellow and director of homeland security at the Center for American Progress. He previously served as the senior director of public affairs for the National Security Council and as the principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.

MS&L awarded GSA certification

WASHINGTON: The US General Services Administration (GSA) awarded certification to MS&L Worldwide on April 14 for advertising and integrated marketing solutions, according to a federal filing. The GSA is a federal agency that oversees government contracts.

US trade representative appoints Guthrie, Mesloh to public and media affairs posts

WASHINGTON: Ron Kirk, US trade representative, named Carol Guthrie assistant US trade representative for public and media affairs on March 23. Kirk also appointed Deborah Mesloh deputy assistant US trade representative for public and media affairs on March 2. Guthrie, former communications director for the US Senate Finance Committee, reports to Kirk and Julianna Smoot, Kirk’s chief of staff. Mesloh, previously the communications director for the Presidential Inauguration Committee and the Obama for America campaign, reports to Guthrie.

Airfoil formalizes client solutions, adds public affairs

SOUTHFIELD, MI: Airfoil Public Relations formalized its client solutions team and introduced its public affairs unit on March 26. The client solutions team now houses public affairs, brand strategy, marketing communications, and digital and social media. The Southfield, MI-based firm also hired Larry Ayres and Bret Wacker as MDs of the public affairs unit. Ayres previously was a senior consultant for American Business Development Group and Wacker is the former president and CEO of Adecco Government Solutions. Both report to Tracey Parry, SVP and client solutions practice leader.

Spectrum changes name, opens New York office

WASHINGTON: Spectrum Science Communications changed its name to Spectrum as part of a companywide rebranding. Since the start of 2009, the Washington-based health communications firm has opened a New York office to better serve its pharmaceutical clients, and partnered with Simon & Company, a health policy and health financing firm. The rebranding is in preparation of changes in health policy for the firm and its clients.
