Legg Mason appoints Magleby head of IR and corporate comms

BALTIMORE: Legg Mason has appointed Alan Magleby as MD, head of IR and corporate communications. He will be responsible for all of the company’s relations with investors and analysts, as well as corporate communications with shareholders, industry and trade media, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders. He will report to chief administrative officer, Joseph Sullivan. Prior to joining Legg Mason, Magleby had held the SVP of IR post with Washington Mutual since 2004. Previous experience includes a number of leadership positions with JP Morgan Chase, including CFO and various communications posts.

US Chamber hires Connelly

WASHINGTON: The US Chamber of Commerce hired Chris Connelly as the director of communications and research for its Global Intellectual Property Center, starting March 16. Connelly, the former director of communications for the US Department of Agriculture, reports to Mark Esper, EVP of the Global Intellectual Property Center. It is a new position.

Marina Maher hires Ricci as SVP

NEW YORK: Marina Maher Communications hired Robert Ricci as group SVP of social media, responsible for expanding the agency’s social media capabilities. Most recently, Ricci was SVP of the digital and emerging media group at Taylor. Prior to that, he was VP of Screengrab, Weber Shandwick’s interactive, social and emerging media division.

Schwartz realigns executive management

WALTHAM, MA: Schwartz Communications has promoted Bryan Scanlon, previously EVP and GM of the agency’s San Francisco office, to president. Cofounder Steve Schwartz will relinquish his president title but remains as the CEO. Simultaneously, the Massachusetts-based firm promoted Ari Milstein to COO. He also retains his previous position of CFO. Scanlon and Milstein report to Schwartz. Paula Mae Schwartz, formerly COO, will move to focusing on HR where she takes on the title of “chief people officer.”

The married pair - Steve and Paula Mae - will now spend more time on their film company, Chockstone Pictures, where they are both principals, according to an agency statement.

National Alliance of Forest Owners hires Whiting

WASHINGTON: The National Alliance of Forest Owners tapped Dan Whiting as director of communications, effective March 23. Whiting, the former chief of staff for the US Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, reports to Dave Tenney, president of the private forest owners’ organization. It is a new position. Prior to joining the USDA, Whiting was the spokesperson for former republican Idaho senator Larry Craig during the legislator’s men’s bathroom scandal.

Rabin Strategic Partners hires Martin

NEW YORK: Rabin Strategic Partners named Bill Martin, president of global health at Cohn & Wolfe, a partner, effective April 13. Martin, whose last day at C&W is March 27, has been with the firm since July 2004. C&W is currently looking for a replacement, said Eric Litchfield, VP of communications for the firm.

Kwittken & Co. hires new MD, Jim Gorman

NEW YORK: Kwittken & Company (KCO) recently named Jim Gorman an MD. He will be responsible for growing the agency’s financial services practice through client acquisition, in addition to leading several current client accounts. Previously, Gorman was the head of PR at electronic marketplace, Liquidnet.

Former White House comms director opens firm

WASHINGTON: Kevin Sullivan Communications, a firm founded by the White House communications director for former President George W. Bush, opened its doors March 19. The Washington-based firm offers message development, strategic communications, crisis communications, pre-media interview strategy, media relations, and speeches and editorials.  Sullivan, who said he could not disclose names of any clients, also announced that he is working with Weber Shandwick as an EVP.

Quinn Thomas hires Bounds

PORTLAND, OR: Quinn Thomas Public Affairs named Tucker Bounds, the former deputy communications director for Senator John McCain’s (R-AZ) presidential campaign, a partner, effective March 1. Bounds said he will split his time between Portland, OR and Washington, DC.

USDA taps Mather as communications director

WASHINGTON: The US Department of Agriculture named Chris Mather its director of communications, effective March 3. Mather was Jill Biden’s press secretary during the 2008 presidential election and is a former political director for Change to Win, an organization comprised of seven unions and six million workers.
