CBP hires Maya for passport outreach

WASHINGTON: Government agency US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has hired Maya for a public awareness campaign about the new passport requirements that requires citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport when entering the US from any part of the Western Hemisphere. The new law went into effect on January 23, 2007. The agency held a one-day satellite media tour with CBP commissioner Ralph Basham.

Former government official forms Cooley Public Strategies

NASHVILLE, TN: Former Tennessee Deputy Gov. Dave Cooley has formed Cooley Public Strategies, a new subsidiary of Nashville-based PR firm, McNeeley Pigott & Fox. Cooley will be a principal at MPF, a position he held from 1993 to 2001, when he left to run the successful gubernatorial campaign for Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City Taps M Booth & Associates

NEW YORK: Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City has chosen M Booth & Associates to lead a regional and national communications campaign geared towards the expansion of the Harrah’s Atlantic City property, including The Pier Shops at Caesars. Managing this account will be Joan Bloom and Joan Brower, SVPs and co-directors of M Booth & Associates’ travel & lifestyle practice, with Josh Rosenberg, VP, leading the account team.

Global Vehicles taps the Titan Agency

ATLANTA: Global Vehicles has named the Titan Agency its AOR. Titan will handle the launch and marketing of the Mahindra line of cars, the first India-manufactured vehicles to be sold in the US. The line of cars, which includes a SUV, sport rally vehicle and two-door, single cab pick-up truck, are scheduled to debut in the US in the fall of 2008.

Dowie, Stoddard receive sentencing

LOS ANGELES: A federal judge on Monday sentenced former Fleishman-Hillard Los Angeles executives Douglas Dowie and John Stodder to incarceration.

Former LA GM Dowie received 42 months, 3 years probation, and $15,000 in fines. Former SVP of public affairs Stodder received 15 months, 3 years probation, and no fines. Both were issued a surrender date of March 30. Dowie maintained his innocence and said he would appeal. It is undecided whether Stodder will appeal or not.

A federal jury convicted both on counts of conspiracy and wire fraud last May in relation to their roles in allegedly defrauding the city’s Department of Water and Power, among other agency clients.

Three new execs at Ogilvy DC

WASHINGTON: Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide announced three new hires, with Rory Davenport joining as SVP of public affairs, Greg Johnston as SVP and group creative director, and Sean O’Sullivan as VP in Ogilvy PR’s social marketing practice.

Hantman joins Yahoo as VP

SUNNYVALE, CA: Yahoo has hired David Hantman, formerly chief of staff for Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), as VP of public policy. Prior to his work with Schumer, Hantman was chief counsel to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Democratic chief counsel on the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security.

Biz360 adds metric

SAN MATEO, CA: Biz360 has announced the extension of its MediaSignal brand monitoring metric to blogs. The new metric will allow allows marketing and PR executives to measure their brand and word-of-mouth impressions in social media, identify influential bloggers on topics of interest, and compare social media discussion to professional media coverage.The MediaSignal for blogs metric incorporates two of the most accepted approaches to measuring social media – reach data samples and link analysis – into a single metric. In addition, it accounts for the prominence of specific topics and brands discussed on a blog, so a blogger will generate more MediaSignal on subjects discussed more often.

Glover Park announces major hires

WASHINGTON: The strategic communications firm The Glover Park Group has announced a number of major new appointments. Julis Rochman has been named SVP in the public affairs division, where she will lead a range of major corporate and issue-advocacy accounts. Beth Tritter joins the company as VP for legislative affairs, while Susan Kannel joins as VP in the policy, research and integrated strategies practice. Jason Miner and Tracy Sefl habe both been appointed as VPs in the public affairs practice.

Capstrat hires expand services

RALEIGH, NC: Capstrat has made two new hires to expand its services to engagement marketing and social media strategy: Cord Silverstein joins as director of engagement marketing and Tola Oguntoyinbo joins as social media planner. Silverstein previously worked at MarketSmart Interactive where he was VP of client services and operations. He was responsible for developing engagement marketing programs for clients such as Lowes Home Improvement, Motorola, CitiFinancial, and Black & Decker. Oguntoyinbo earned his masters degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where his thesis covered new business models for online networks. At Capstrat he is responsible for providing clients with practical strategies for effectively utilizing social media and deploying social media tactics and applications on behalf of clients to engage customers and improve their communications, both externally and internally.
