Georgetown University taps Kormis as associate dean

WASHINGTON: Georgetown University named Chris Kormis associate dean for marketing and communications for the McDonough School of Business, effective January 5. Kormis, who replaced Raymond Cooper, reports to George Daly, dean of the McDonough School of Business. Kormis is charged with overseeing media relations, publications, speaker events, branding, and Web development. Her last position was as assistant VP of university relations at George Washington University.

Renee’s Gourmet hires Strategic Objectives

TORONTO: Renée’s Gourmet, a producer of salad dressings, has selected Strategic Objectives as AOR. The agency’s first program will involve its new line of “Wellness” dressing.

On The Record Sports hires JHG

SAN DIEGO: OnTheRecordSports.com has enlisted JHG as its AOR. JHG is providing digital and traditional PR services to build awareness for the still in beta site in the competitive fantasy sports market. JHG’s PR division launched On The Record Sports to the media and multiple target audiences nationwide last month.

Heinz’s Smyth to move to McGraw-Hill

NEW YORK: McGraw-Hill has hired Ted Smyth as its new EVP for corporate affairs, overseeing  the corporation’s marketing, communications, government affairs, and community relations. He will also be executive assistant to the chairman, president, and CEO. The hire is effective February 16. He succeeds David Stafford, who will move to McGraw-Hill’s legal department as VP and associate general counsel.

Smyth was most recently chief administrative officer and SVP of corporate and government affairs at Heinz. At Heinz, Steve Clark, chief people officer, will be promoted to the office of the chairman, while Michael Mullen will be promoted from director to VP of corporate and government affairs.

Former CDC director to consult with Edelman

NEW YORK: Edelman announced that Julie Gerberding, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has joined the firm as an “of counsel” advisor. She will consult with clients about strategy for the public health, nutrition and wellness, and environment and global social responsibility sectors. “It’s great for us and our clients,” said Nancy Turett, global president of health at Edelman, who also noted Gerberding’s broad experience in the health sector. Gerberding from the CDC in preparation for the incoming Obama administration.

EWinery taps Elevator Communications

SAN FRANCISCO: EWinery Solutions has hired Elevator Communications to provide PR services to its winery clients. The agency will provide green PR and assist the company’s wineries deliver “eco-messages.”

Capitol Solutions names Miller VP

WASHINGTON: Capitol Solutions hired Rachel Miller, a former director of federal affairs for BP America, as a VP in the firm’s energy and environment practice. Miller, who started January 5, reports to David Taylor, CEO, and Daniel Tate, partner, of the Washington-based government relations firm. It is a new position.

VMWare taps Fleishman

Constellation Wines US taps Renegade

FAIRPORT, NY: Constellation Wines US hired Renegade as AOR for its brand, Toasted Head. The agency’s PR duties will include events, digital promotions, and generating an ongoing dialogue with brand enthusiasts. These duties will be leveraged in the forthcoming “Fire Things Up” campaign.

Former NBC News producer launches DC firm

WASHINGTON: Former NBC News reporter and senior investigative producer Jim Popkin has launched Seven Oaks Media Group in Washington, DC, as a firm specializing in strategic and crisis communications. The agency will also provide media placement, media training, and litigation communications services, Popkin said by e-mail.
