White House’s Snow to resign Sept. 14

WASHINGTON: White House press secretary Tony Snow will resign on September 14, to be succeeded by current deputy press secretary Dana Perino, President Bush announced today. Snow had previously been expected to leave the post in January.Though Snow, 52, recently underwent treatment for colon cancer, his departure is for financial rather than health reasons, CNN and other outlets reported. Prior to becoming press secretary in April 2006, Snow was a TV commentator for Fox News.

Focus banks on Arketi Group

ATLANTA: Investment banking firm Focus has selected Arketi Group as AOR. The agency will handle PR strategy and business media relations for the Washington-based client, which specializes in merger, acquisition, and corporate finance services for emerging and middle-market companies.

Levin moves to Child’s Play

NEW YORK: Child’s Play Communications has named Sara Stern Levin VP. In her new role, Levin will identify new business opportunities for Child’s Play, as well as oversee current agency accounts including Kidz Bop and Parents magazine. Prior to joining Child’s Play, Levin served as VP of communications at licensing firm 4Kids. Before that, she was communications director for Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products.

Marketwire acquires Collegiate Presswire

LOS ANGELES and CLIFTON, NJ: Marketwire has announced its acquisition of Collegiate Presswire, a provider of electronic content and services to college and university media outlets. Collegiate Presswire carries press releases, photos, media alerts, and other content for more than 1,100 college media outlets, higher education trade publications, news Web sites, and other outlets. College Presswire founders Matthew Farlie and Lisa Bannerot will stay on, Farlie as product manager for the company’s monitoring and reporting solutions and Bannerot to integrate the two offerings. Both will report to Thom Brodeur, SVP of global strategy and development at Marketwire.

Vocus launches Vocus Summer ‘07

Ashton Partners represents plaintiffs in lawsuit

CHICAGO: Ashton Partners is providing strategic communications counsel, media relations and outreach services, and managing the Web site for the 15 plaintiffs who have filed a lawsuit against Quixtar, the name that Amway currently uses in the US. The plaintiffs allege that Quixtar knew that it was operating a pyramid scheme and prevented distributors from leaving the organization without penalty. The lawsuit was filed on August 9 in Los Angeles federal district court.

Vandiver named president-elect of Pinnacle Worldwide

ST. LOUIS, MO: Donna Vandiver has been named president-elect of Pinnacle Worldwide, an international corporation of independently owned public relations firms. Vandiver, president and CEO of The Vandiver Group, a Pinnacle Worldwide member, will serve a 2-year term beginning September 1. She will become president in 2009.

Cartoon Network appoints social responsibility chief

NEW YORK: Cartoon Network has promoted Alice Cahn to the newly created position of VP, social responsibility. In her new role, Cahn is responsible for providing guidance and content direction regarding the development of social responsibility initiatives across all network divisions. She will build relationships with child-advocacy groups, educators, and trade associations, and coordinate communications efforts regarding children’s media issues and regulations with appropriate governmental agencies. Cahn previously served as VP, development for Cartoon Network’s kids’ businesses.
