DOJ brings in former Yahoo public affairs director

WASHINGTON: The US Department of Justice named Tracy Schmaler as the deputy director of its office of public affairs, effective March 30. In Schmaler had worked with the DOJ in her former position as senior director of global public affairs for Yahoo. She now reports to Matthew Miller, director of the office of public affairs. Yahoo has not filled her position, according to a company spokesperson.

Gutenberg adds former White House communications director

NEW YORK: Gutenberg Communications has added Loretta Ucelli, the former assistant to the president and White House communications director for President Bill Clinton, as a senior adviser. Ucelli will aid the firm as it expands across industries. She is currently an independent strategic communications consultant, but past experience also includes roles as SVP of corporate communications at Pfizer, and an EPA associate administrator for communications, education and public affairs.

Public Strategies hires former Newsweek reporter

WASHINGTON: Public Strategies tapped Richard Wolffe, Newsweek’s senior White House correspondent, as a senior strategist, effective April 13. Wolffe’s coverage followed President Barack Obama during the primaries and former President George W. Bush during his two terms. He will be based in the Washington office. It is a new position.

ICR hires Sorensen as CFO, MD

WESTPORT, CT: Financial communications firm ICR appointed John C. Sorensen as CFO and MD for bankruptcy and restructuring communications. His responsibilities will include oversight of the company’s corporate services team, including finance, IT, and HR, and assisting the senior managing partners with day-to-day operation. He joins ICR from aerospace and industrial supply company Kaman Corp.

NBA hires SVP of communications

NEW YORK: The NBA will gain a new SVP of communications, Elizabeth Ventura, former SVP of marketing and communications for  Standard & Poor’s, May 11. In the newly-created position, Ventura will handle all of the league’s US and international communications. Her team includes Brian McIntyre, SVP of basketball communications, and Mike Bass, SVP of marketing communications.

Lifetime hires two comms execs

LOS ANGELES: Lifetime Networks hired two new VPs within publicity and communications, effective immediately. Lindsay Drewel, who most recently served as president of her own Washington-based PR firm, was hired as VP of publicity and talent relations, while Les Eisner, formerly EVP at The Lippin Group, comes on as VP of corporate communications. These two hires complete the Los Angeles-based executive communications team for Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network, and Lifetime Digital, the company said.

Policy Impact to open Arizona office

PHOENIX, AZ: Policy Impact Communications plans to open an office in Phoenix, AZ, and hire Mitchell Menlove as VP of the new location, effective April 1. Menlove is a former director of government affairs for law firm Greenberg Traurig. He will report to William Nixon, CEO of the Washington-based government relations firm. The Arizona office will have two employees.

CBS Television appoints VP of diversity and communications

LOS ANGELES: CBS Television’s Tiffany Smith-Anoa’i was named VP of diversity and communications for the company. Smith-Anoa’i has been in the media relations and publicity department at CBS for nine years and will be based at the West Coast headquarters in Studio City, CA. She reports to Chris Ender, SVP of communications for CBS Television. In addition to her communications duties, Smith-Anoa’i will work with Josie Thomas, SVP of diversity for CBS Corporation, on diversity initiatives, assist with recruiting and retaining diverse talent, and serve as a liaison to multicultural groups.

The Heritage Foundation taps Gonzalez as VP of comms

WASHINGTON: The Heritage Foundation named Michael Gonzalez, a former Wall Street Journal editor and reporter, a VP of communications, effective March 23. Gonzalez reports to Ed Feulner, president of the conservative think tank, and replaces Rebecca Hagelin, who is now the senior communications fellow. Gonzalez will focus on day-to-day messaging, media relations across the domestic and foreign policy fronts, and internal communications. He also oversees editorial services, broadcast services, and strategic communications.

SAG hires director of comms

LOS ANGELES: The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) hired Damon Romine as director of communications, effective April 1. Romine, most recently the director of entertainment media for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), will oversee day-to-day department administration and handle writing and editorial duties for Screen Actor magazine. He will report to Pamela Greenwalt, executive director of communications for SAG.
