Schwartz named VP at Powell Tate

WASHINGTON: Powell Tate named Melissa Schwartz as VP. Schwartz most recently was communications director for Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and prior to that was communications director for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.

Moran, Gibbs, Pfeiffer lead Obama’s White House comms

WASHINGTON: President-elect Barack Obama named Ellen Moran as White House director of communications and Dan Pfeiffer as deputy director of communications. Obama also officially named Robert Gibbs as press secretary, as previously reported in the media. Moran is currently executive director of Emily’s List, while Pfeiffer was communications director for Obama’s presidential campaign. Gibbs was the Obama campaign team’s senior strategist for communications and message.

Garrett named Porter Novelli SVP

WASHINGTON: Eddie Garrett joined Porter Novelli as SVP of new media. His initial work at the firm includes overseeing the redesign of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FCIC) electronic deposit insurance estimator Web site, which provides public information on which bank accounts are fully insured by the FDIC. Garrett was previously director of communications and new media at Turner Broadcasting System.

CJRW joins Burson’s network as affiliate

LITTLE ROCK, AK: Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods (CRJW) formed an affiliate partnership with Burson-Marsteller, making CRJW Burson’s first US-based affiliate. The arrangement - under which CRJW remains independently owned but works with Burson’s regional CEO - gives CJRW clients access to Burson’s global staff and services and provides Burson with an expanded presence in the mid-South and Southwest regions of the US.

Ketchum’s Washington Group merges with Clark & Weinstock

WASHINGTON: The Washington Group (TWG), a Ketchum-owned lobbying firm, merged with Clark & Weinstock (C&W), another Omnicom-owned government relations and lobbying firm. The new company will continue under the C&W name. C&W chief Vin Weber, a former Republican congressman from Minnesota, said in a statement that the merger creates a broad, bipartisan team experienced in a range of sectors. TWG president and CEO Susan Molinari recently left the firm to join Bracewell & Giuliani as a senior principal.

Two hires at Lucas Public Affairs

SACRAMENTO: Lucas Public Affairs recently made two hires, including Julie Marengo as SVP. Marengo formerly was director of communications for the League of California Cities and an in-house strategic consultant to the city of Sacramento. Jessica Spitz Biller also joined Lucas as VP. She previously was with Porter Novelli Sacramento.

Louder Than Words signs three new clients

BOSTON: Louder Than Words signed three new clients: the Boston Schoolyard Initiative, for which the agency will promote schoolyard renovation projects; 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers’ East of Massachusetts, for media support related to labor contract negotiations; and Advancing Women Professionals and the Jewish Community, to promote the launch of a new book.

Qorvis names NRCC’s Hanretty an MD

WASHINGTON: Karen Hanretty, former communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, joined Qorvis Communications as an MD. Qorvis said the November 4 election may have put Democrats in firm control of government, but that successful public affairs campaigns over the coming years will still require effective bipartisan outreach. In recent years, Hanretty has also served as a political commentator for Fox, CNN, and MSNBC.

ASHI names Gibbs & Soell AOR

DES PLAINES, IL: The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) named Gibbs & Soell its AOR. The New York-based agency’s Chicago-area office will provide strategic PR counsel, consumer and real estate media relations, and communications messaging and training. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Widmeyer hires Curwen, VP of public affairs

WASHINGTON: Widmeyer Communications added Elizabeth Curwen as a VP in the firm’s public affairs practice. Curwen was previously a senior associate in APCO Worldwide’s issues management and grassroots practice. Prior to that, she was director of public affairs for the American Chemistry Council.
