Berard launches strategic consultancy

SAN FRANCISCO: John Berard has launched Credible Context, a communications consultancy advocating consistent messaging. Berard plans to combine his experience in financial, corporate, and technology communications in the new venture. Berard is a former MD of the Zeno Group’s now defunct San Francisco office.

NAACP adds two to comms team

WASHINGTON: The NAACP tapped Leila McDowell as its VP of communications and Chris Fleming as the deputy director of communications. McDowell, a former consultant for her firm McKinney & McDowell Associates (now McKinney & Associates), started February 1. She reports to Benjamin Jealous, CEO and president of the NAACP. Fleming, former CEO of Prime Time Strategies, reports to McDowell. He started April 3.

Ogilvy promotes Thomas Smith

NEW YORK: Ogilvy PR Worldwide promoted Thomas Smith to EVP and group director for the agency’s New York corporate practice. Smith, who joined the corporate team in March 2004, will manage the group and provide senior-level counsel to companies working on enhancing their corporate reputations.

Fox Broadcasting hires Paez as VP, corporate comms

LOS ANGELES: Fox Broadcasting hired Gaude Lydia Paez as VP of corporate communications. She will serve as a press liaison on issues including ratings, senior executive initiatives, and industry-wide developments, and act as a spokesperson on behalf of senior management. Paez, who most recently served as head of corporate communications for Internet television service Veoh Networks, also served as director of corporate communications at Yahoo and worked at BSMG Worldwide and Burson-Marsteller.

‘Foreign Policy’ names Pierce PR, marketing manager

WASHINGTON: Foreign Policy named Dianna Pierce PR and marketing manager, effective March 30, overseeing the magazine’s communications and marketing efforts. Previously, Pierce worked as a senior producer for ABC News’ Nightline and as an assistant to presidential adviser David Gergen during the Clinton administration. She reports to editor-in-chief Moisés Naím, executive editor Susan Glasser, and publisher Amer Yagub.

David All Group hires Eilon

WASHINGTON: The David All Group (DAG), a conservative Web 2.0 agency, named Ethan Eilon its manager of political and grassroots advocacy, effective April 6. Eilon is the former executive director of the College Republican National Committee.

H&K adds senior management in DC office

WASHINGTON: Hill & Knowlton added four senior hires and one appointment in its Washington office, effective immediately. Terry Neal, former SVP at the Caraway Group, was appointed SVP and director of strategic media in the corporate practice. Christopher Hull, former president of Issue Management Inc., was named SVP and campaign manager in the public affairs practice. Antoinette Forbes, former SVP at Porter Novelli, was named SVP in the healthcare practice. Stacie Paxton, former national press secretary for the Democratic National Committee, was named VP for strategic media in the public affairs practice. Steven Immergut, former SVP in H&K’s healthcare practice in New York, was appointed SVP and director of the Washington healthcare practice.

The agency noted it has hired about a dozen people since January for its Washington office.

Edelman hires Madden for new position in CSR

CHICAGO: Edelman recently hired Jane Madden as its first SVP of CSR and sustainability in its Chicago office. Madden’s responsibilities include strategic counsel and assistance on CSR stateside and abroad in emerging global markets. Most recently, Madden was president of her own consulting firm, Social Sustainability International. The agency said it saw a need for the role because of clients’ increasing need to connect with stakeholders on environmental, social, and corporate governance practices.

Bates joins StevensGouldPincus

NEW YORK: StevensGouldPincus (SGP) has added Don Bates as senior counselor. Bates was MD at Media Distribution Services for a decade before joining the George Washington University faculty in 2007, where he now teaches PR writing and media relations, as well as teaching and consulting for the Latin American program. Brodeur departs Marketwire

TORONTO: Marketwire has laid off Thom Brodeur, the company’s SVP of global strategy and development, according to Paolina Milana, VP of marketing for the company. PRNewser first reported the news. Brodeur joined the firm in January 2007 and he oversaw product development and integration, media relations, and strategic alliances, among other duties.  According to Milana, the cut was part of strategic planning that began “before 2008″ and includes investment in technology. The company is hiring, Milana continued. Brodeur called the split “amicable” and said he’s still deciding on his next career move.
