    Atomic PR wins Sigma, FalconStor

    SAN FRANCISCO: Atomic Public Relations has been named AOR for two technology companies: Sigma Designs and FalconStor Software. Sigma makes high-definition consumer products, including HDTVs. FalconStor provides data protection services.

    NASA press secretary Acosta joins Qorvis

    WASHINGTON: Qorvis Communications has hired former NASA press secretary Dean Acosta as MD, working with Qorvis aerospace and technology clients. Prior to serving as chief spokesperson for NASA, Acosta worked as a radio, print, and TV journalist, and won an Emmy for investigative reporting.

    JS² Communications adds two

    LOS ANGELES: JS² Communications has appointed Chris Bess and Alissa Pinck GM for the Los Angeles and New York offices, respectively. Both will work with agency principals Jeff Smith and Jill Sandin to strategically manage and grow business, with Bess also spearheading growth of the agency’s consumer entertainment division. Bess spent 14 years at Walt Disney Studios’ Buena Vista Home Entertainment, most recently as executive director of national publicity and field marketing. Pinck was most recently VP at G.S. Schwartz & Co., where she spearheaded communications campaigns for a wide variety of consumer and corporate clients, including Anheuser-Busch, eToys, and Cold-Eeze.

    Rockland elected to chair PR measurement commission

    GAINESVILLE, FL: The Commission on Public Relations Measurement & Evaluation of the Institute for Public Relations has elected David Rockland as its chair for 2007. Rockland is a partner and global director of research at Ketchum. He has a doctorate in economics and has held positions in corporate, academic, and research provider organizations.

    Gonring joining Gagen MacDonald

    MILWAUKEE: Matthew Gonring is leaving his position as VP of global marketing and communications at Rockwell Automation to join PR firm Gagen MacDonald in Chicago, beginning January 1, 2007. The firm does not use titles, and specializes in employee communications and organizational development. During Gonring’s time at Rockwell, the company engaged in a corporate brand repositioning to emphasize its role in providing industrial automation solutions. He was also a driver for the company’s adoption of an integrated marketing approach. Gonring’s replacement at Rockwell has not yet been named.

    Dearfoams hires FWV

    RALEIGH, NC: R.G. Barry Corporation, The Dearfoams Company has hired French/West/Vaughan (FWV) to provide media relations, product placement, and program development support for its lines of accessories footwear. The account, which was awarded following a competitive review, will be managed out of FWV’s New York office. Founded nearly 60 years ago, Dearfoams claims 40% of the US market for accessories footwear.

    McAdam leaves Wal-Mart for Darden post

    ORLANDO: Robert McAdam, Wal-Mart’s VP of corporate affairs, is leaving the retailer to join Darden Restaurants as an SVP of government and community affairs. McAdam has been a prominent member of Wal-Mart’s communications team, often serving as prime media spokesman on some of the company’s most contentious issues. Before joining Wal-Mart, he worked for Fleishman-Hillard, the Tobacco Institute, and on staff at the US House of Representatives. Darden owns restaurant chains including Red Lobster and Olive Garden. In his new position, he will lead the company’s public policy, community relations, and brand communications work.

    Rightclick Strategies now Adfero Group

    WASHINGTON: Rightclick Strategies announced it has changed its name to Adfero Group, to reflect its work not just on interactive campaigns but also strategic counsel and other public affairs services. Adfero, whose name in Latin means “to carry or bring news,” counts among its clients AARP, the US Chamber of Commerce, and CTIA.
